What is Infrared Heat?

Infrared is a wavelength of light similar to the energy produced by the sun. This band of light is not visible to the human eye, but heats the body directly by a process called “conversion.” Conversion means that instead of heating the air in order to heat the body, this wavelength of light penetrates the body and heats it from the inside-out. In fact, the human body itself produces infrared heat to keep warm and to repair tissues. Internal production of infrared energy is associated with a variety of healing responses. The human body radiates and absorbs heat in the 3-50 micron range (achieving the greatest benefits at 9.4 microns). The infrared sauna emits a small portion of its output in the 2-5.6 micron range which promotes deep penetration and the rest around 9.4 microns matching the peak frequency for potential human use. So, the infrared heat produced by the TheraSauna is just like the heat from the sun or that which our own bodies produce as they burn fuel to keep us warm and to repair damage to our tissues.

Effects of Infrared Heat on the Human Body

Because the body radiates and absorbs heat most effectively in the 9.4 micron range—the same as is produced by the TheraSauna, your body will absorb more beneficial infrared rays in a shorter treatment time with this sauna. Through “resonant absorption,” live cells selectively absorb infrared in this range boosting the body’s innate capacity for healing and tissue repair. When a cell or tissue is exposed to 7-10 microns of infrared heat, mechanisms stimulate the body’s healing response. This process includes dilation of blood vessels to increase the flow of oxygen rich blood to all cells of the body, stimulation of cellular enzyme activity, and promotion of adhesion and transfer of water molecules across the cell membrane. Infrared heat vibrates and breaks apart large deposits of water and fat where toxins are stored. By releasing trapped toxins and stimulating the movement of lymph, this wavelength of light promotes healthy immune function and efficient excretion of waste products.

Contraindications to Using Infrared Heat

  • Be sure to consult with a primary care physician about your specific health condition.
  • Some pharmaceutical prescriptions have interactions with infrared light. Check with a physician or pharmacist.
  • Patients with adrenal suppression, systemic lupus or multiple sclerosis should exercise caution with treatments that raise their core temperature.
  • Recent acute injuries should not be exposed to heat during the first 48 hours following the trauma or until the hot/swollen symptoms subside.
  • Do not use the sauna if you are pregnant or suspect you may be.
  • Consult your surgeon if you have had any metal pins, rods, artificial joints or implants placed in your body. In addition, silicone is heated by infrared energy. Silicone will not melt unless heated to 220°C and, therefore, should be safe in the sauna. But, for safety’s sake, consult with a physician or your surgeon first.
  • Heating the low back and abdomen during a woman’s menstrual period may temporarily increase flow. No negative implications of this side effect occur.
  • Hemophiliacs or other patients with blood/clotting disorders should avoid usage of the infrared sauna as vasodilation can potentiate the tendency to bleed.
  • Should any condition worsen with the use of the TheraSauna, discontinue use and consult a physician.
